Summit Wellness offers effective acute detoxification from benzodiazepines using the Br+ protocol. Due to the unique characteristics of the effects of benzodiazepines on the brain relative to other addictive substances, a longer 13 to 15 day outpatient treatment program is required that safely detoxifies patients through benzodiazepine withdrawal under medical supervision. Additional medical considerations may apply and be recommended on a case by case basis.
Benzodiazepines are a class of prescription medication most often used to treat anxiety or insomnia. For some they represent a significant risk for misuse and chemical dependence. Dependence and withdrawal can happen even when they are taken as prescribed. Acute benzodiazepine withdrawal can be a medical emergency resulting in withdrawal seizures or delirium and can be life threatening if abrupt discontinuation is attempted without medical supervision. Acute withdrawal includes very high anxiety, a feeling of “jumping out of one’s skin”, elevated pulse and blood pressure, shakes, and severe prolonged insomnia. The sustained high levels of anxiety associated with PAWS (Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome) from benzodiazepines are among the most severe in duration of all substances.
